Being at a crossroad can be tough but unexpected change leads to opportunity. I want you to remember that. Whether you are making a particularly difficult decision or you are simply trying to decide where to go for dinner, it is a choice that could impact the rest of your life, or just what you eat for dinner that particular night. Whatever the choice is, challenge yourself to choose you.
So often, I see people make decisions that they think they should make based on the opinions of others. Rather than choosing what they truly desire, they choose what others would want them to do or what society says they should do or what finances dictate. I am one of those people. I make decisions to appease others, I make choices for financial stability, and I make choices for the recognition that it was the “right” choice.
I used to defend this approach up and down to myself. I would convince myself that I was taking the most responsible, most realistic approach. This left me leave me feeling safe, secure and responsible ninety-nine percent of the time. Lately though, I have been thinking of that one percent of the time. What if just this one time, I made a decision because it made me happy and not because it was the choice I felt that I “should” make. I very rarely take a leap to choose what I really want. Because of this, I often have the same outcomes despite wanting different results.
Recently, I was forced to make a decision that goes against all of my previous rules. Was it scary? Yes. Am I anxious about it? All of the time. Did those close to me disown me? No.
In the last few weeks, I walked away from stability, financial freedom, friends, projects I was proud of and so much more. It was hard but I know in my heart that it was the best choice for me in the moment. You see, these types of moments, these choices, they are the moments that have the potential to change our life. Choosing the path that makes us most comfortable will always be the easiest but it might not always be the path that leads to new opportunities.
The next time you are faced with a choice, I empower you to challenge yourself. Challenge yourself to take the path that won’t lead you down the safe road that you are so used to taking. Be open to going in a new direction — one that will change your life for the better. Choose to focus on the benefits of the unpopular path. Take the leap. Everything happens for a reason and what is meant to be will always find a way. The universe has your back. Trust it.
